While The Earth Remaineth
In Genesis 8:22 God gave this promise to all of mankind. "While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." As with all of God's promises we can be sure that He will carry this out. We see the wild geese flying north and other warm weather birds are returning after their winter's absence. When the flowers are pushing the ground open above them and making their beautiful appearance and the trees budding and sending out their new growth, we are reminded of God's faithfulness.
Sometimes we think the seasons are slow in changing but eventually as sure as night turns into day, cold turns into heat just as God has said. God said it would be this way as long as the earth stands and so this is the way it will be.
On the other hand this verse also reminds us that the earth will not always remain. As sure as we can depend on night and day and the changing seasons, just as sure we can know that "the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up" (2 Peter 3:10). The faithfulness that God has revealed "while the earth remaineth" will also be realized when "the day of the Lord will come."
Some may think that because the day is delayed it will not come, but again, just as sure as night follows day the end will come. The only reason it has not yet is because of God's longsufferingness.
"God is not willing that any should perish but that all would come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9).
