It has been said, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity."
We tend to think of opportunity our own chance to take a significant step ahead in life. We love the idea of an open door or a favourable moment to seize the chance of a lifetime. But from God's perspective, opportunity takes on a different meaning at times.
God can use our worst circumstances as His best opportunities to bring real meaning into our lives. Whatever our personal trouble may be, whether it is bad health, an empty bank account, blighted love, grief, loss of a job, God can use it as an opportunity. When we get to the end of ourselves, feeling our own helplessness and undoneness, God can use this as an opportunity to teach us to lift our eyes higher than ourselves and trust Him. God's resources are never exhausted! He invites us to "cast all our care upon him: for he careth for you" (1 Peter 5:7). There is a condition in the preceding verse and that is that we humble ourselves under His mighty hand. This is where our difficulty often comes. We do not like to humble ourselves. But it is in these difficult times that God may best be able to help us learn to put our trust in Him.
This principle was true in the apostle Paul's life, and I am sure it is true in our experience as well. In 2 Corinthians 1:8, 9 Paul recalled a time when he and his friends were under great pressure, far beyond their ability to endure. They even thought they might die. But Paul said that during those troubled times they learned to put their trust not in themselves, "but in God which raiseth the dead."
If we in times of hurt or great loss are drawn to God and learn to trust Him more fully, then God will love to use our setbacks to move us ahead and we will be beneficiaries in the end.
