Global warming has become a household term recently since unusual weather patterns have been observed. Record high seasonal temperatures, broken-off ice fields and snow in unusual places have everyone talking. Theories abound. Many are bewildered. Some are frightened. Where will all of this come to yet? Will global climates continue to heat up until we literally fry on the earth?
God, the Creator of the earth, has given us some information in His Word that gives reassurance to us amidst the uncertainty of the unknown. First of all, we have God's promise that as long as the earth remains there will be seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter and day and night (Genesis 8:22). As long as the earth remains He will not disrupt life on the earth globally.
Secondly, the Bible also tells us in Hebrews 1:10, 11 that the earth is aging. The resources of the earth are being depleted. Petroleum and mineral deposits will not last forever. Wind and water erosion depreciates valuable land. Deserts are growing. Urban centres are eating up arable land. Along with these changes we should not be surprised if weather patterns are also affected. Certainly it is right for man to exercise his knowledge in relating to these degenerating forces. God intends man to be a caretaker of the earth. However, God does not intend the earth to last forever. He is preparing a better place for His people to live with Him for eternity.
God also warns us that time as we know it will come to an end and then the earth will be completely destroyed. 2 Peter 3:10 says, "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up." He is going to remove His redeemed children to the new heaven and earth before destroying this sin-cursed earth. Its time of usefulness will be over.
There is no need to be frightened as we face the future. The earth will continue to sustain its inhabitants as long as time continues. And God is still holding open the door of grace and opportunity for sinful man to salvation so that we can escape that awful final judgement.
